EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL STYLES OF PRACTICE

The asana forms have many external and internal styles. The external style of practise is very active, emphasising light and quick movements linking the asana whilst holding the asana for short duration. This increases energy flow and the body becomes supple due to the increase of heat. In contrast the internal style is more receptive in nature and develops endurance by holding the asana for longer periods. Greater inner strength and stability is created with emphasis on long, slow, smooth breathing. The Sakshin Ghatastha grades comprise many asana forms of both external and internal styles.

These two approaches have different qualities. Both styles develop the body and focus the mind. Those who study yoga need to be aware of the qualities of both styles and practice both in a balanced and harmonious way.
